ITINERARY FOR MARKHA VALLEY TREKKING TOUR

Trek 1

 

Day 01: Arrive Delhi ,

Where you will be met and transferred to your hotel.  

 

Day 02: Delhi – Leh (3500m) by plane.

Take the morning flight for Leh. Check into the guest house and relax the whole day. This is necessary for getting acclimatised. Overnight at hotel.

 

Day 03: Leh - Shey - Thiksey - Hemis

On this day you will go a sightseeing trip to some ancient monasteries in this area.

 

Day 04: Leh - Spitok (Drive) - Trek To Zinchen (3200 M)

Leave Leh early morning by Jeeps and reach Spituk (1 hr). Visit the Spituk Gompa, built about 500 years ago. Start the trek from here by crossing a bridge and walking south-west of the river Indus. The gorge section leads to the confluence of Indus and Zinchen. Camp near the village of Zinchen . Overnight in Tents.

 

Day 05: Zinchen - Yurutse (3900 M) Via Rumbak

It's a gradual climb from Zinchen to Rumbak. From here one gets fabulous views of the snow capped Stok Mountains . From here we move along the Rumbak Nala towards Yurutse. At Yurutse village you will find fields of barley and potatoes. Overnight in Tents.

 

Day 06: Yurutse - Skiu (3100 M) Via Ganda La

A gradual ascent followed by a steep climb gets one to the Ganda la (4900 M). From here views extend south to the Zanskar range and distant summits of the Himalayan range. This is followed by a long descent to Shingo village. From Shingo the trail heads into a narrow gorge leading towards Skiu. At Skiu there is a confluence of the rivers coming from Markha valley and Shingo. Overnight in Tents. 

 

Day 07: Skiu - Markha (3800 M)

It's a very pleasant hike, up the Markha valley today with the trail crossing numerous streams. Markha is a quaint village with a deserted fort and a small village Overnight in Tents.

 

Day 08: Markha - Thochuntse

From Markha the country changes and the warm, relatively heavily wooded sections of the lower Markha is left behind. One will be required to cross the river several times as there are no bridges here. Hankar, en route, is the highest village in the Markha valley. Overnight in Tents.

 

Day 09: Thochuntse - Nimaling (4700 M)

Trek starts on a good path with several small inclines and a series of grassy ridges. There are a series of mani walls (walls carved with Buddhist prayers) and chortens en route. This is one of the most beautiful high valleys in Ladakh and is dominated by the Kangyaze peak. Overnight in Tents.

 

Day 10: Nimaling - Kongmaru La (5150 M) - Sumdo

Today one will cross to the north of the Markha, climbing to the top of the highest of the three passes, the 5,306 M Kongmaru La, with its wonderful views from the top. There are snow peaks in every direction and on a clear day the giants of Karakoram, including K2 , can be seen on the north-western horizon. The trail descends to the Martselang valley, following the Martselang stream to the village of Sumdo . Overnight in tents. 

 

Day 11: Sumdo - Hemis (4 Hrs Trek) - Leh

Today make an easy descent along the Martselang to where it broadens into the valley of the Indus at Martselang village. Board the awaiting jeeps. Visit Hemis monastery and after that drive to Leh via Shey and Thiksey monastery. Overnight in a hotel.

 

Day 12: Leh - Delhi

Transfer to the airport for the spectacular flight across the main chain of the Himalaya to Delhi . On arrival we will drive to Agra . Overnight Hotel

 

Day 13: Agra / Delhi

 

Morning visit to Taj Mehal a memorial of lover’s. Later drive to Delhi to catch flight to Home.

 

 Trek 2

 

 

LAMAYURU- CHILING-MARKHA- MATHO.

A very interesting trek beginning at Lamayuru and walking up the less traveled Ripchar valley with its small villages, nomadic settlements and pastures where you see a wide variety of flowers from end of July to end of August and birds too. You cross some high passes with excellent views of the Karakoram and the Zanskar ranges.

The initial part of the trek till Chilling is less traveled. From Chilling you cross the Zanskar river by a pulley cable and continue into the Markha valley-most popular and considered one of the best valleys in Ladakh.

This trek is not difficult but is demanding in stages due to the terrain. The average walking time is 5-6 hours.

 

:

 

Day 01: Arrival in Delhi . Upon arrival you will be met by our representative and transferred 30 minutes to hotel Park . Overnight hotel.

 

Day 02: Early morning transfer for flight to Leh. Arrival and transfer to Hotel Kanglhachhen. Afternoon free.

 

 

Day 03: Sightseeing at Shey, Thikse and Hemis monasteries.

 

Day 04: Drive to camp at Uleytokpo visiting Alchi monastery enroute.

 

Day 05: Drive to Lamayuru. Visit the monastery built in the 10th century and one of the oldest monastic sites in Ladakh.

 

Day 06: Trek starts.The trail heads down the valley before turning east to Prinkitila (3506m). Descend from the pass to the scenic village of Wanla . Camp overnight.

 

Day 07: Hinju: - Follow a nice wide path till the village of Penji from where you leave the main trail and head up the Ripchar valley to Hinju.

 

Day 08: Continue up the valley to grazing areas which support the village summer camps to camp at the base of Konzela.

 

Day 09: Begin a short but steep climb to Konzela (4950m) for views of the Zanskar range. A long and steep descent brings you to a camp by the river at Lanak.

 

Day 10: Chilling (3390m):- Follow the left bank of the river to the village of Sumda then go up the ridge to another pass - Dunduchunla (4435m) and descend to camp near the village of Chilling, the inhabitants of whom are the only ones who are the main metal workers making Ladakhi copper utensils.

 

Day 11: Skiu (3390m):- Cross the Zanskar by pulley cable and follow a lovely trail to camp at Skiu.

 

Day 12: Markha (3810m):- A full walking day. Cross the Markha River at two places  

to the village of Chalak . Beyond this settle-ment is an impressive line of chortens and a huge mound of goat horns. Follow the Markha River to the village of Markha to camp overnight.

 

Day 13: Thachungtse:- Follow the main trail passing the monastery at Humlung to the village of Hankar . We now go away from the wide valley and go up a narrow valley to the pastures at Thachungtse. (5-6hrs).

 

Day 14: Nimaling (4700m):- Approx. 3-4hrs from Thachungtse, the trail climbs steeply to the plateau and pastures of Nimaling with impressive views of Kangyassey peak.

 

Day 15: Rest day at Nimaling. Optional hike up the left shoulder of Kangyassey.

 

Day 16: Chogdo:- Begin a gradual climb of about 2 hrs to the top of Kongmarula (5030m), the highest point on the trek with excellent views of the Stok range and the Karakoram range of mountains. Descend to the wooded gorge to camp at Chogdo.

 

Day 17: Shangphu:- Follow the Shang Tokpo (stream). Go up Shang la at 4900m and descend to camp.

 

Day 18: Leh:- Descend from Mathola to the village at Matho. Drive to Leh visiting Stok Palace and museum on the way back.

 

Day 19: Free day in Leh.

 

Day 20: Rafting on the Indus. Grade 2+ with a lot of waves. Approximately 3 to 4 hrs of fun on the river. Return to Leh.

 

Day 21: Extra day to be adjusted in case of flight cancellation or exchanged for an Agra extension.

 

Day 22: Fly Leh - Delhi . 

 

 

Trek 3

 

Padum – Lamayuru Trek!

 

North of the Great Himalayan range, amongst a tangled knot of jagged mountains, lies a rugged and fascinating land, the once independent kingdom of Zanskar .

 

Sandwiched between the Indus Valley and the main crest of the Indian Himalaya, this remote and inaccessible setting, well guarded by snowy mountain passes, has kept alive an archaic form of Tibetan Buddhism which flourishes in chain of far-flung monasteries, most of which occupy spectacular fortified locations, high on rocky ridges in isolated valleys.

 

Lovely high meadow camp sites and dry desert land, high passes and snow-capped peaks stunning scenery, Buddhist monasteries and picturesque villages with their irrigated fields of barley and potatoes, and fascinating encounters with the Zanskari people turn a trek in this area into an unforgettable experience.

 

Itinerary for Padum – Lamayuru Trek

 

Day 01: Arrive Delhi , where you will be met and transfered to your hotel. (Hotel B&B)

 

Day 02: Delhi - Leh (3500m) by plane.

 

 

Day 03: Visit Leh

A whole day at leisure in Leh. You can visit some of the most famous and oldest monasteries of Ladakh (15th and 17th century), Thikse, Shey and Hemis and take a walk to the colorful bazaar. Overnight at Hotel.

 

Day 04: Leh - Kargil (3700m) by bus.

 

Day 05: Kargil - Padum (3600m) by bus.

 

Day 06: Padum - Karsha (3600m) in 3h.

A pleasant walk through fields. On the way we will visit Pepiting monastery and the Karsha Gompa--one of the most important in Zanskar and dating back to the 15th century. We have beautiful panoramic vistas of the full Himalayan range.

 

Day 07: Karsha - Pishu (3470m) in 5h. We progress along the Zanskar river.

 

Day 08: Pishu - Hanumil (3380m) in 5h.

An easy-going walk along the right bank of the river takes us to Rinam village. We continue to the tiny hamlet of Hanumil.

 

Day 09: Hanumil - Purfi La (3950m) - Snertse (3850m) in 6h.

Up and down over a steep path.

 

Day 10: Snerstse - Hanuma La (4950m) - Lingshet (4000m) in 6h.

After a steep climb we reach the Purfi La pass, from where the panorama towards the Ladakhi and Zanskari ranges is quite impressive. Visit of Lingshet monastery.

 

Day 11: Lingshet - Camp before Singue La (4550m), in 6h.

We start a long and gradual ascent to the Netuke La pass (4280m), where we have a wonderful view towards the Nierag valley. The trail then descends shortly to reach Skimpata and Gongma villages, then climbs steeply to reach the second pass, Khyupa La (4300m).

 

Day 12: Camp before Singue La - Singue La (5050m) - Photoksar (4200m) in 6h.

An amazing spectacle of hanging icefalls. We descend towards the Photang river and progress through barley fields.

 

Day 13: Photoksar - Sirsir La (4850m) - Hanupatta (3760m) in 6h.

Photang valley turns into a gorge labyrinth, which forces us to make a detour via Sirsir La pass. Three shortens mark Hanupatta and its giant hundred-year-old cedar, flanked by colorful prayer flags.

 

Day 14: Hanupatta - Wanla (3250m) in 5h.

We head down towards the Photang valley and climb up to the Panjila pass(3410m). We finally descend to Wanla and visit its tiny monastery.

 

Day 15: Wanla - Lamayuru (3420m) in 4h.

Visit of the monastery at Lamayuru, which is the biggest in western Ladakh and was built in the 16th century on the site of a much older temple. The gompa is very well kept and famous for its many colorful wall paintings.

 

Day 16: Lamayuru - Leh (3500m) by bus.

 

Day 17: Leh – Delhi by plane.

 

Day 18: At leisure in Delhi . Safety day for your international flight. (Hotel B&B)

 

Day 19: Transfer to airport and fly back home.
